Streptomycin sulfate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It primarily binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Bacteria are highly susceptible to developing resistance to streptomycin. Combining streptomycin with other antibacterial or anti-tuberculosis drugs can reduce or delay the development of resistance. It is used to treat tularemia, plague, severe brucellosis, and glanders (often in combination with tetracycline or chloramphenicol). It is also used as a second-line treatment for tuberculosis, often in combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs.
