Neomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside family of antibiotics. Its effects and efficacy primarily include the following:
I. Antibacterial Effects
Neomycin inhibits the growth of a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including but not limited to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Pneumococcus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Meningococcus. It achieves this antibacterial effect by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis, effectively treating infections caused by these susceptible strains.
II. Topical Applications
Neomycin is commonly used clinically to treat localized infections of the skin, eyes, and ears. It is typically applied as a cream, eye drops, or ear drops to help reduce the local bacterial load and accelerate the healing process. Neomycin is also used to treat local reactions caused by burns.
III. Infection Prevention
Neomycin can be used as a preventive measure before surgical procedures to reduce the risk of postoperative infection. For example, oral neomycin before gastrointestinal surgery can reduce the bacterial population in the intestine, thereby reducing the chance of surgical infection.
IV. Treatment of Complicated Infections
For some complicated skin infections, such as impetigo or concurrent eczema infections, neomycin is highly effective when used in combination with other medications. It can enhance the antibacterial effects of other medications, effectively combating complex infections.
However, it is important to note that neomycin also has certain side effects and precautions:
Allergic Reactions: Some patients may experience allergic reactions to neomycin, such as rash and itching. Allergy testing should be performed before use, and the patient's reaction should be closely monitored.
Ototoxicity and Nephrotoxicity: Neomycin is ototoxic and nephrotoxic. Long-term use or high doses may cause adverse reactions such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and kidney damage. Therefore, the patient's hearing and renal function should be closely monitored during use.
Other Adverse Reactions: Neomycin may also cause gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, as well as neurological symptoms such as dizziness and unsteadiness.
